Rt Hon Sir John Whittingdale OBE MP

Member of Parliament for Maldon

The Maldon Constituency

The Maldon constituency was created in 2010 and covers a largely rural area of mid-Essex with an extensive and distinctive coastline.

Communities and geography

The constituency includes the towns of Maldon, Heybridge and Burnham-on-Crouch, together with surrounding villages such as Althorne, Mayland, Purleigh, Southminster and Tillingham. Maldon District Council is Conservative-controlled, and as Member of Parliament John works closely with councillors and officers on issues affecting residents and the wider district.

Coast and countryside

The district has a population of around 62,000 and is defined by its rural character, historic settlements and strong links to the sea. More than 60 miles of coastline shape the landscape, including the estuaries of the Rivers Blackwater and Crouch, which are internationally recognised for their importance to wildlife and migratory birds.

Maritime heritage
Maldon is closely associated with sailing and maritime history. The River Blackwater remains home to the Thames Sailing Barges, many of which can still be seen at Hythe Quay — a reminder of the area’s trading past and an enduring part of its identity today.

Chelmsford communities

Parts of the constituency also extend into areas administered by Chelmsford City Council, including Bicknacre, Danbury, Little Baddow, South Woodham Ferrers and neighbouring villages. Chelmsford serves as a major centre for business, retail, leisure and public services across Essex.

County services

The entire constituency falls within Essex County Council, which is responsible for education, highways, social care and elements of planning and infrastructure.

Historic roots
Although the current Maldon constituency dates from 2010, the name has deep historic origins. A parliamentary constituency of Maldon existed from 1332 until 1983, making its re-establishment a return to one of Essex’s oldest political identities.
