Rt Hon Sir John Whittingdale OBE MP

Member of Parliament for Maldon

Churchill’s Fish and Chips

Sir John recently paid a visit to Churchill’s Fish and Chips in South Woodham Ferrers. Churchill’s has proudly remained a family-run business for four generations since its founding in 1923, and has grown to encompass 32 locations across London and the East of England.

During his visit, Sir John was joined by representatives from HospitalityUK and had the opportunity to meet with the owner, James Lipscombe. The discussion focused on the significant challenges currently facing high street restaurants, particularly in light of recent Government policies that have led to a substantial rise in employment costs

Sir John heard firsthand about the pressures these changes are placing on businesses like Churchill’s, which are striving to balance rising overheads while continuing to serve their local communities. The visit provided an inside look into the realities faced by long-standing family enterprises and highlighted the importance of supporting the hospitality sector during a time of economic uncertainty. Sir John will take these key insights on board as he continues to champion local businesses in Parliament.
