Rt Hon Sir John Whittingdale OBE MP

Member of Parliament for Maldon

Page Turning Ceremony

Sir John was honoured to take part in the weekly page-turning ceremony of the Book of Remembrance in the House of Commons, a longstanding tradition held every Wednesday to honour those who gave their lives in service to the country.

The ceremony forms part of Parliament’s ongoing act of remembrance, ensuring that the names and sacrifices recorded in the Book continue to be recognised by each generation. It serves as a quiet but powerful moment of reflection at the heart of national life, paying tribute to servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Sir John said it was a privilege to be involved in the ceremony and to help uphold a tradition that reflects the nation’s enduring gratitude. He noted the importance of remembering not only the scale of that sacrifice, but also the individuals and families behind it.

Quoting the words that have come to define remembrance across the United Kingdom, he reflected:

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
