Responding to the Government’s statement on new Nuclear Investment on Tuesday 10th June, Sir John Whittingdale, MP for Maldon, sought to establish the Government’s current position on the possibility of a new nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-Sea.
In the statement, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, set out the Government’s plans to invest in nuclear power by committing £14.2 billion for the construction of Sizewell C, over £2.5 billion for small modular reactors (SMRs), and an additional £2.5 billion for fusion research. He also stated the Government’s ambition to facilitate private-led advanced nuclear projects – advanced modular reactors and SMRs – in the UK.
Sir John said: I welcome the Government’s commitment to proceed with new nuclear development which is essential for the UK’s energy security and to reduce carbon emissions from conventional generation. Bradwell has a long connection with nuclear power generation and was one of the Government’s designated sites for new nuclear investment. As the Secretary of State confirmed, it remains a good location and I certainly intend to take up his offer to discuss this with him and his officials”.
