Many of my constituents have contacted me about the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and the escalating violence affecting Palestinian civilians.
I fully understand and share the deep concern about the devastating humanitarian crisis unfolding, particularly in northern Gaza, and the alarming reports from the UN Commission of Inquiry regarding potential war crimes.
I too am alarmed by the destruction of vital infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, and the continued loss of life. I absolutely agree that it is essential for all military actions to comply with international law, and that the protection of civilian life must be the paramount consideration in any conflict. The UK has a responsibility to uphold international human rights standards, and I will continue to advocate for the UK government to take a stronger stance on the atrocities being committed in Gaza.
However, I believe that the UK’s role in this crisis must be rooted in a balanced and constructive approach. While I acknowledge the need for the UK government to take a strong stance on human rights, I do not support calls for blanket arms embargoes. Arms control and export policies must always be carefully considered in the broader context of international security and foreign policy. I believe that the UK must continue to engage with all parties diplomatically to ensure that international law is respected and that meaningful efforts are made toward a just and lasting peace.
The UK has a vital role to play in encouraging dialogue, supporting humanitarian aid, and ensuring that international law is upheld in the region. I will continue to call for action that prioritizes the protection of civilian lives and the promotion of peace, while ensuring that the UK’s actions align with its broader international obligations.
Human rights should be defended, not sidelined or politicised, and I will continue to advocate for their central role in shaping our foreign policy. I will continue to raise the situation in Gaza in Parliament, and work towards constructive solutions that aim to alleviate suffering, protect innocent lives, and promote long-term peace in the region.
